My favorite birthday memory was the one and only time that people gave me money instead of clothes or things. They apologized, but I was so happy!
I was twelve and my best friend, Etta Louise Johnson ( Wilson), were allowed to spend my birthday money. It was great, because we bought what we wanted to, instead of having our parents buy us what they wanted us to have. It was the most special birthday of all!
We bought barbeque potato chips, chocolate candy, and the old 45 records. Of course, we had to have only Dr. Pepper "the real thing." No diet sodas for us. I was and am a "junk food junkie". We went around the block to Handy Dan, it was on the corner of Munn Street and Holland Avenue in Jacinto City, Harris County, Texas 77029.
I don't even remember the records that we bought, I just remember how excited I was to be able to buy whatever I wanted to. I felt my first taste of freedom...freedom of choice. We loved Chubby Checker and Elvis Presley.
I thank God everyday to have been born when I was, where I was, and to Christian parents, that taught me right from wrong. And...I think that is why it is so important to me...to keep our freedoms...that my ancestors fought and died for...and to write our family history! I lived in a day where things were much simpler and a lot less chaotic than now. Those were the "good old days".
